ATR is a unique private company established in March 1986, through the broad support of industry, government and academia, with the aim of promoting fundamental and innovative R&D activities as well as contributing to society in a wide range of telecommunication fields.  We opened our current research laboratories in April 1989 as the first resident of ‘Keihanna Science City’ following three years of activity in temporary research labs in Osaka.  Since its establishment, world-leading fundamental and creative research on information and communication technologies has been promoted through collaboration with various research institutes, organizations, and companies in and out of Japan.  So far, outstanding research achievements have been steadily accumulating in fields such as neuro/knowledge science, intelligent robotics, and language translation.

Research and development for information and communication technology is indispensable to the formation of a true communication society, which will provide people with a more satisfying living environment by facilitating human communication.  Moreover, information and communication technology will have a profound effect on efforts to conserve energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions in order to improve both global and living environments.  We are proud to play a part in promoting important measures not only for Japan but also for human beings by pursuing fundamental research and development for information communication.

Even as a business corporation, ATR receives competitive research funds from public and private organizations, which has launched us on a mission to conduct fundamental research from a long-term perspective by effective use of those funds.  In addition to continuous efforts in pursuing the most advanced research and development in the world, and despite a challenging business situation, we are determined to focus on the feasibility of our research results being broadly utilized in society and making them more useful and accessible to all people.
